Located in the eastern Caribbean, The French West Indies are a slice of France set down in the tropics. These are part of the many islands which make up the group of Lesser Antilles, or "Breezy Islands" and on this expedition you will visit three of the best:
Martinique - Nearly a third of Martinique is forested and other areas are given over to pineapples, bananas and sugar cane fields. The island is infamous for its complete destruction of the city of Saint-Pierre in just five minutes when Mount Pelée erupted in 1902, the worst volcanic disaster of the 20th century. You can still find fishing villages and remote beaches untouched by development, and there are plenty of hiking trails into the mountains. |
Îles des Saintes - This irresistible group of islands of the Lesser Antilles is certainly off the beaten track. Often likened to a miniature Rio de Janeiro with its landscape of curving green hills, upon arriving in the bay at Terre-de-Haut (land of high) you will understand why it is nicknamed “The Pearl of the Antilles”. |
Guadeloupe - A lively fusion of French and African influences, Guadeloupe’s butterfly shape conceals two attached islands separated by a salt river. The main island or right wing of the butterfly, Grand-Terre, features rolling hills and boasts the main port city Pointe-à-Pitre and many of Guadeloupe’s most beautiful beaches. Conversely, it is on Basse-Terre, the smaller and more rural island to the west, that one will discover the mountains, a superb nature park with orchid-filled rainforests, small coastal towns and the island’s famous black sand beaches. |
This is an outstanding island adventure that includes the following activities:
